A short walk with a long lens

Published in life, photography.

Another work day done at home, another walk in the early evening light before we go home for pasta and collapsing on the sofa. I took my DSLR and the 50-200mm lens, a combination I’ve ignored for ages.

Tonight it’s a loop over the north end of town, past the deserted hotel and the stud farm. Horses stand silently looking away from us, like they’re expecting something.

There are small signs of life, of community in action. Just after we got home and before we got the pasta cooking, it was 8 o’clock and the street started clapping. I’ve been avoiding social media so I didn’t know it was happening, but I abandoned the pasta and went outside, and clapped and whooped and cheered. We live in a valley clinging to a hillside; the whole place rang with applause.
