Back in 1995, Kate and I went backpacking round western Turkey. It was a fabulous, unforgettable trip.
We visited ancient ruins, including Troy and Ephesus. We toured underground cities and stayed in a cave in Cappadocia. We were given fresh cucumber snacks by a local woman as we sat sweltering on a delayed train, motionless in the middle of nowhere.
In Pamukkale, we stayed in a friendly family-run hotel, entertained by the antics of their mad teenage son and the superb cooking of his elder sister. We climbed the travertine terraces and sat in them to watch the sunset, our toes wriggling in the warm mud.
